Thanks Scout2012, it is a very well done visualization of the earthquakes hitting Japan in 2011.

One encouraging thing to observe is that the data is implying that the tectonic plates are moving relatively smoothly since the large quake in March. The line at the bottom of the visualization is quite flat in early 2011, which means that there were few quakes. The Earth's plates are always moving though, so those few quakes imply that energy is building up. After March, the slope of the line is quite a bit steeper, which means that the quakes were much more numerous, and therefore much smaller. Even at the end of the visualization's timeline, that slope is encouragingly steep, but perhaps by 2015 it will be flat enough for the energy to build up again. Even if the slope flattens, it doesn't imply that the energy will be released as a single large earthquake again.

I just thought it was interesting because it reminded me of microwaving popcorn (I guess that no one else thought so... I probably should've made some sort of reference to it in the original post).

The only difference is that the popcorn hasn't slowed down the popping yet, which means it's not yet ready (yea... I definitely should've made a reference; I missed a golden opportunity).

FYI: Microwave Popcorn Instructions:
*Stand near the microwave and listen as the popcorn pops. Stop the microwave when popping slows to two to three seconds between pops.*

It was interesting to see the trend leading up to the big quake. A bit chilling too.

Yes, yes, yes. Japan usually has a major earthquake every +-70 years or so. The last before the 2011 one was in 1923. No real surprise

No-one said that violent earthquakes are great fun or anything. Just that, from an objective point of view, the visualisation was very interesting to see.
