I replied in the salary thread but thought I would post it here too:

Take off another 7000 - 8000 yen a month for taxes approximately (I pay 7900 but then it's given back to me but it won't be for you).
That's my best guess off the top of my head so more like:
200 000 - 240 000 a month, maybe more depending on the season and your bills.
The 200 000 is for higher rent, the 240 000 and up would be for subsidized/free rent.

Feel free to send me a message if you have any particular questions about the interviews, especially if you are from Vancouver (I'm a 2011 JET who is re-contracting this year)! I can't wait to meet the new JETs this year, and I hope a large chunk of them are Canadian.![]()
Again, good luck!

Thanks AVNicholls! I suppose approximately 40000 is good enough to cover taxes & bills & such (excluding rent)?

So you'll be getting 280 000 a month.
Then you minus around 8000 for tax, unless your CO sets you up to do it at the end of the year all in one go. At my old job I had to do it at the end but arrange to pay it over several payments.
Then you minus rent. You can imagine this is 0 - 50 000 yen.
Then you minus water, gas, and electricty which will vary wildly from month to month and town to town. But let's say between 10 000 at the best (low usage and low price) and 20 000 at the worst (though factors could make it higher). Also I have heard of a few, not common, who have these bills subsidised.
Then you minus extra bills like car, internet, phone, cell phone and any other you may wish to tack on. These vary so wildly I won't even bother.
Were those questions about placement and students for both Businesstime and I or only Businesstime?
