Does anyone know what our approximate take home amount from the salary (after taxes and all that goodness) should be? I can't really get a quota since the new change is quite different (but mainly confusing) from the old salary and it would just be nice to have an expectation of how much I will actually earn.

I replied in the salary thread but thought I would post it here too:

Take off another 7000 - 8000 yen a month for taxes approximately (I pay 7900 but then it's given back to me but it won't be for you).
That's my best guess off the top of my head so more like:

200 000 - 240 000 a month, maybe more depending on the season and your bills.
The 200 000 is for higher rent, the 240 000 and up would be for subsidized/free rent.

Hey all! Good luck with your interviews! Feel free to send me a message if you have any particular questions about the interviews, especially if you are from Vancouver (I'm a 2011 JET who is re-contracting this year)! I can't wait to meet the new JETs this year, and I hope a large chunk of them are Canadian. :D

Again, good luck!

3:15 on a Monday? Any Victoria or Vancouverites around the same time?

Getting really nerveous now, hard to prepare when your laptop is broken.

and Businesstime, how is life in Japan? Hard, easy, fun? Is it expensive or do you save some money each month?

Thanks!!

Thanks AVNicholls! I suppose approximately 40000 is good enough to cover taxes & bills & such (excluding rent)?

Again, thank you! I forgot to ask, where are you placed? How do you like it? What are the kids like? Do you get to save up?

So you'll be getting 280 000 a month.
Then you minus around 8000 for tax, unless your CO sets you up to do it at the end of the year all in one go. At my old job I had to do it at the end but arrange to pay it over several payments.
Then you minus rent. You can imagine this is 0 - 50 000 yen.
Then you minus water, gas, and electricty which will vary wildly from month to month and town to town. But let's say between 10 000 at the best (low usage and low price) and 20 000 at the worst (though factors could make it higher). Also I have heard of a few, not common, who have these bills subsidised.
Then you minus extra bills like car, internet, phone, cell phone and any other you may wish to tack on. These vary so wildly I won't even bother.

Were those questions about placement and students for both Businesstime and I or only Businesstime?

1:30 on Monday... from Surrey... but not really from Surrey, just living there. I put Edmonton as my Hometown. Sadly I don't know much about Vancouver area to consider it a hometown, not to mention, I haven't lived here long enough hehe.

280,000 is much more than I get per month after taxes, pension, and insurance is removed. I end up with about 265,000. Then there is still bills, rent, and groceries. My guess is that new ALTs will make about 200,000 or so after tax, but I guess we can wait and see what people end up getting. 200,000 is still a good amount, and you could probably save 50,000 yen/month if you wanted.

2 MATH MAJORS. 1 TIME SLOT. FINAL DESTINATION.

I live in Coquitlam (right near Coquitlam Centre mall). I'm not sure how I'm getting there... I'll prob end up skytrain-ing, maybe driving if the weather is bad.

You're very welcome. I know how confusing it can all seem, before JET I worked for an eikaiwa and had to figure it out on my own so I hope to help people so they don't have to.

So now, with JET, I live in a small town (4000 people) in North Eastern Hokkaido. It's very rural but I love it. The people are so friendly and kind. They bend over backwards to help me and take care of me, huge change from my previous job.
I work at 11 schools in the small but spread out town area, basically the town and nearby villages. Nursery all the way through high school. Keeps me very busy and always on my toes. I love the little kids they have so much energy and they still get excited about English class, something I'm hoping to instill in them so strongly it continues in JHS, HS in my town is a real tough spot as the kids there are mostly fed up with school as a whole let alone English. Great kids, so-so students.

Any other questions you have let me know!

Also, as an aside the 280 000 is still very very liveable even if your rent is high, though debts at home might make it a bit tighter. At my previous job I made 250 000 in an urban area and paid 48 000 in rent a month (and walked uphill both ways in a blizzard) and still had money to travel, go to concerts, buy silly things, indulge in my love of clothes and save up a little.
