BOE depositing salary into a different bank, any chance?

Postby blackrice » Wed Jan 04, 2012 3:01 pm

BOE signed me up with the local bank at the start of my tenure, and I signed up with a second bigger bank with online capabilities/credit card a few months ago. Would love to have my wage deposited into the latter so I can easily access my money online, pay bills, and do furikomis with relative ease. What are the odds of this happening? Slim to none I feel.

it's possible, I reckon. You'd be better off asking your tantosha or supervisor or someone there coz i'm sure it's another one of those ESID.

I know a lot of people here got their account with the default bank, but I asked to set mine up with the post office, and that seemed fine. But they needed to ask if that was possible first. Now, I didn't change after I got it setup, so not sure, but some BOEs do (and logically must) allow people to use other banks and stuff... Just whether or not it's easy to do! xD

It may NOT be possible. Many native Japanese people have at least two bank accounts because their employer will only deal with one, but you almost need a postal bank account in many places and it has the best ATM availability anyway. When I was on exchange several years ago, I had the same issue; my school would only disburse my scholarship money and any reimbursements for events to the local bank they had their account with, but I had to have a postal bank account to pay for my phone and one of my utilities.

I'll vote for maybe possible. My office offered to switch and deposit into a different bank account to make it easier for me to pay my rent (housing company wanted me to use a particular bank).

Easier way is to just ask the office ladies what banks the school/board is willing to deal with and select the best from there. Like was previously mentioned they might not be willing to accommodate another bank they don't deal with, but there might be a decent bank in the list they will deal with. I asked for a list and they gave me one about a week later (wanted online abilities, my local bank did not have these to speak of), which had 3 banks on it. They did mention that changing it over is really easy though, as you just fill out the same piece of paper you did at the start of your contract with the new banking info on it.

Sadly I did not like the other two options so I stayed with what I am.

sorry to hijack this thread, but does anyone know if the Post Office bank has online abilities? Online things would be nice. I definitely miss being able to pay things online! ><

The Post Office bank does have online banking, but from the looks of it, it's Japanese-only. I didn't look at this page in detail, but I'm guessing that you have to fill out a paper application for it. I have two Japanese bank accounts and for both of them I had to request a paper application.

thanks. Yeah, I saw the login thing and figured they'd have something, but just wasn't exactly sure if that was for general banking or something else!
Darn that language barrier! xD I'll figure it out eventually, I hope... haha

Hey I have JP bank account and I signed up for online banking last month. It's just a paper form you fill out and then they mail you the log in info. The only hard part is remembering all your login info as you have to set up a password, security pictures and security questions.

I would recommend it. I use it to transfer money and check my account regularly.

They usually have them on the counter, they look like pamphlets and the form is inside. You can just ask at the counter for the internet banking form and they'll give it to you.
