I've received plenty of comments and questions about my breasts (but only from the students) and that has honestly been it. I was concerned when I got over here that people would be all LOOK AT FATTY MCFATTYSON when I walked past, but nothing has happened. I'm in the midst of getting healthy myself (I'm a binge eater/Over-eater so I'm striving to break my emotional ties to food, and also to begin to enjoy exercise). I never believe in the 'got to get skinnier' thing...for me it's about being healthy (and being able to run faster than the slowest person during the zombie apocalypse).

I also never believe in BMI, largely because The All Blacks (International top team whoop whoop Rugby World Cup 2011 Cup winners) are all labelled as 'Obese' according to BMI. They're all big muscular men who run around on a field for 90 minutes. If that's not healthy, I don't know what is...

Aye, I've never heard friends who are big girls complain about people insulting their weight. They do however get a fair bit of crap from students and the occasional random stranger about breast size. They'll often talk about how big they are right in front of them.

As to BMI....don't dismiss it so out of hand.
Sure, for super built, super fit people it goes seriously out of whack, equally too for utter weaklings, but for normal people with an average amount of muscle it is a fairly accurate indicator.

I have a friend who is smack-bang in the middle of her 'healthy weight' zone for her height, but is cursed with GG breasts. BMI puts her at obese. Thanks boobs. That's why I don't follow BMI ratings.

BMI is what it is. A quick and simple calculation which anyone can do.
All these other tests are more complicated and require various equipment or specialists. Of course they:re better and more accurate for it. For what it is though BMI is for most people a decent rough guideline.

I believe weight issue is more a concern for children, and teenagers when comments (usually hurting ones) made to them can be destructive to their self esteem. Sometimes these remarks actually made them depressed and they ended up, by eating more. In US, one in every 3 children is overweight. That can be a concern as obesity is linked to a host of diseases including heart failure. However remarks as mentioned above, could hurt the young child more. So the best solution would be to reduce weight at a younger age, and parents would need to do their part by setting good example by not eating junk food and lead a healthy life style by exercising and eating a balanced diet.

I am glad that overweight students in JET do not have the issue of being sneered at. If they are not at a critical range of being obese, then it would be ok. Still, a healthy life style should be the way to go as it would be to your own benefit. Don't trust the BMI as it does not take your muscle weight into consideration. Check with your doctor. All the best to your days in JET. Cheers!

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but Marketpro's post looks like astroturfing to me, in which case, don't waste your time replying to it.
A few clues...
Non-native type mistakes in the English, which are kind of conspicuous on a forum like this. I think there are more mistakes than can be explained by tiredness/having been in Japan too long. I know some ALTs are not native-English speakers, but if you combine this with the other clues...
No post history (this is the only post).
Vagueness - this post seems like a lot of empty phrases, that don't really say anything substantial.
Weird mistakes like referring to JET participants as 'students'.

Astroturfing is annoying, and the aim is to derail the discussion or influence it for some gain. Google astroturfing and crowdturfing to find out more.
Marketpro, if you're a legit JET, then, sincere apologies...
