Depends on your washer, but with mine (fairly sure it doesn't have a soak function >_>) I set it to fill up as if it were a regular large load of laundry, then hit the button to make it pause and set a timer to let it sit for an hour before unpausing it to let it do its thing.

And you should let the cleaner on for 12 hours (not only 1 hour).

Wow; that was the most helpful spam message I've ever seen. If it weren't for the link at the bottom and the fact that it is TruthfulLies only post, I could almost believe that it was a legit post. They're getting smarter...

How much bleach do you use and how long should you let it sit for?

The advice I got from my Japanese mom years ago was to use the whole bottle and let it soak overnight. This was, however, to simply cure the grossness of having bought a used machine. She gave me the same advice for the tub. Different cultural ideas of grossness aside, if a whole bottle of laundry bleach (Japanese size) doesn’t cure your woes, it may well be time to get a new machine. If you don’t like the idea of using that much bleach, go to the hardware store and look for the basket cleaner previous posters mentioned. There are some eco-friendly versions out there. Make sure you run through a full cycle after cleaning your machine, too.

As I wrote before, I got my predecessor washing machine. She didn't clean it for 7 years something.... I had to use 2 full bottles for the dark stuff to finally stop going out...
I let it sit 12 hours and then did a full cycle

I was in a similar situation to elfe_noire. I'm not sure if my pred ever cleaned the machine in the 4 years he was here, but there was definitely some sort of funk coming from the machine in the summer. I used two whole bottles and two separate times, letting the cleaner soak for about 12 hours each time, then ran 2 empty cycles afterwards. Now I have a happy washing machine.

I don't know if it helped any, but there were some times I needed to clean white clothes specifically in bleach and I also let that sit for awhile (maybe 4 hours?) before washing.

Remember to keep the lid open when not in use! >_<
