I can't say I know a great deal about Japanese TV or Movies. I really like Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence though. It's a fantastic film.

After reading all of these recommendations, I decided to give Tokyo Magnitude a try. Literally just finished watching it... Oh, my goodness. Incredible animation, the story is just beautiful.... and yes, I did cry like a baby at the end.
More recommendations please, I'm going all Japanese today!

As you are someone who is applying to be, in a way, something of a cultural ambassador to Japan, I would suggest being a bit more sensitive to word choice...

edit: Thanks.

It may be subjective, but it does tell a lot about a person, whether it be interpreted as good or bad. Your quip of "^^ Subjective." is a bit of bad form as well. You can accept his advice or reject it. Sweeping it under the rug like that is a bit of an insult.

Where was I? Oh yes, back to the thread. Hmm...

I would say my all-time favorite series that sports both would be Slayers. Just can't get enough of swords and sorcery type stuff.
Megumi Hayashibara is just awesome.

Can I ask what's so offensive about what was said about "going all Japanese"? I'm not trolling or anything - I just honestly don't understand why it's considered insensitive. I think I just have a certain cultural ignorance in this case.

On Topic, though, I've generally only explored Japanese animated series. Now before I get attacked for being an Otaku Weeaboo or something, I would like to mention that most of my Western television consumption is also animation. I reckon it's kind of natural to want to watch animation when one is an animator. I've watched a fair amount of anime, so I'm not going to rattle off everything I've liked. Bleach and Naruto are the usual suspects (when they're not showing insufferable fillers), but one that I'm currently watching is Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. It's simply bizarre and has quite a dark humour that I appreciate.

^Just to clarify, the word was edited out, most likely by a moderator (I noticed the word was also edited out in my own quote). You can sort of guess because my own edit on my previous post implied something had changed since then. But it was understandably confusing, so no worries :)

Well, I have pretty diverse tastes for just about everything:

Anime: I prefer horror or comedy anime so stuff like Higarushi no naka kori ni, Azumanga Daioh, and Ranma 1/2
Manga: pretty similar in taste to Anime, but I don't read too much lately: Yotsuba
J-Doramas: Gokusen, GTO, Densha Otoko, H2, and I watched Summer Snow years ago (but it was very predictable)
J-Comedy: Gaki no Tsukai, great show bought some of the dvds when I was in Japan last time
Movies: I love both older movies from the 50s, especially by Akira Kurosawa, fav from that would probably be Yojimbo
J-Horror: Nothing really sticks out immensely since I love so many of them.

Music: I really like Perfume and Shinichi Osawa, but overall I'm not very knowledgeable about Japanese music. I'm more interested in indie music in general, and it seems a little bit hard to find Japanese indie music. I've definitely loved The Pillows for quite some time.

Movies: Tokyo Sonata and Densha Otoko are both really good. I love any Studio Ghibli film.

Manga: Nana, Skip Beat, Strobe Edge, and some others.

Anime: Kimi ni Todoke, Samurai Champloo, and some others.

Dramas: I don't know anything about Japanese dramas. I watched 1 Litre of Tears a long time ago and it was really touching and I cried bucketfuls, but since then I haven't really seen any. I'll look up some of the recommendations from this thread.
