Halloween Cooking in Class

Postby AVN » Fri Sep 30, 2011 8:45 pm

So my highschool JTE just told me she wants to do a Halloween themed cooking class.
I've never done a cooking class with any of my schools before, let alone a Halloween one.

I was wondering if any of you have done a cooking class.
If yes, how did it go? Any advice?

My secondary question is what would you consider a "Halloween recipe"?
I'm thinking caramel apples. I mean thought of pumpkin pie or loaf but I'm not sure about time/budget constraints...
I also thought of doing cupcakes (something most kids don't "know") with halloween icing.

The schools that I've cooked at aren't nearly as strict as William's.

I like to check out the room before hand, learn how to use the ovens, gas, and check out what materials are available. Cupcakes are a great idea, but cupcake pans might not be available.

My high school students have always been great about cleaning up, and then the home ec teacher always takes care of the laundry afterward. At Easter I was worried because some rags got dyed. I offered to buy new ones, but the home ec teacher told me not to worry about it.

I always simplify my recipe into the simplest English possible.

Here are some other Halloween recipe ideas.

Oh, and if you could convince your JTE to do this as an afterschool activity instead, that would relieve your stress of time constraints.

Good luck.

I carved pumpkins with my English club and then baked the seeds. I used my toaster oven to cook them. I think I did them for 7 or so minutes. I washed the seeds, melted butter, coated the seeds, and then sprinkled salt on top. The kids LOVED them! I didn't do the cooking as a class though - I just walked around the halls during lunch with a bowl of them. The kids were hesitant at first, but then I couldn't get them away from me! But yeah, if you can find big orange pumpkins, you can make a day out of it.

I'll keep that in mind for future thanks!
