Favourite Japanese TV/Movies

Postby Ertai87 » Sun Apr 17, 2011 6:28 am

I'm really bored and anxious waiting for the Toronto Consulate to report, so I thought I'd start a new thread (I've already read all the existing threads like 7 times each XD)

Topic: What's your favourite Japanese TV shows/movies? List anything you like, whether it's mainstream or not, animated or not, available by "legal" means or not, etc.

Personally, my favourites are:

Drama: Kamen Rider W or Liar Game
Anime: Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
Movie: Battle Royale (the first one)
Animated Movie: Paprika or Spirited Away (千と千尋の神隠し)

They actually asked me what my favorite Japanese movie was during my interview. I was afraid I would upset them since I said that in general Japanese movies were pretty bad, but that there were certainly many diamonds in the rough. My favorite, probably The Hidden Fortress, but there really are a lot of good ones too. I actually really love the animated Metropolis movie as well. No matter how many times I watch it, it really never gets old.

ME TOO. I cried my eyes out. This show (just a few episodes) is amazingly crafted.

Personally, my favourites are:

Drama: Gokusen (the daughter of a crime lord teaches Jr.High. Very funny and touching)
Anime: Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (perfect)
Movie: Fish Story - very cool story about a song saving the world. Told in a disjointed manner. Best film I have EVER seen.
Animated Movie: Voices of a Distant Star (very short anime about distance and separation. It is about space travel and the amount of time communication back home would take. Resembles a 18th century correspondence relationship. Very fascinating.

I actually have a scale on how much an amine makes me cry. The more I cry, the better the anime is, in general. True story.

How's kinpachi sensei? I only know about it through GTO Live Action, where he rents the whole series trying to portray the image of a "good teacher", then gets made fun of for having the whole series in his apartment. Is it actually any good?

Kinpachi sensei is AMAZING! I highly recommend it to those who are going to become ALTs because the tv series shows how Kinpachi sensei goes through so many things as a teacher, and every episode usually has a great message behind it that we can all learn from. 8)

Hmmmmmmmmmm

My main love is dramas. Great for practice and introductions to Japanese culture. Kind of.

Liar Game / Hana Yori Dango / Hana Kimi / Mei-chan no Shitsuji / Mr. Brain / Maou / Nobuta wo Produce / Gokusen (It scared me how much of the school system was spot-on when I first arrived)

And I suggest you all look into Hetalia. The anime is based on the web comic, I believe, and it is basically a huge stereotype of all the countries in various encounters. Informative AND historical AND the stereotyping is done for fun, not to be mean. They even get Japan pretty good. And America runs around being loud and eating hamburgers. Best part: Each episode is 5 minutes long ;)

Movies: Paco and the Magical Book
Animated Movies: Kiki's Delivery Service and Ponyo
Anime: Crayon Shinchan and I have to admit, I still love Pokemon.
TV Show: Vs. Arashi, Music Station... I don't watch much Japanese tv because I have cable.

I could never really get into dramas and I'm not sure why. :?

I don't watch much anime, but I'm man enough to admit that I absolutely LOVE this show. It is honestly probably one of my favorite shows, period, and I can't help but smile every single time I watch it. :D
