Australian/Japanese film

Hi folks

When I was in Japan (a long time ago now - 1987 - 1989!!!) I saw a film made by an female Australian film maker which was partly in Japanese and partly in English. It was about a young australian woman who was in Japan and fell in love /was going out with a Japanese man (I think he may have been a Japanese drummer but I can't quite remember). I know that is not much information to go on but I feel sure that it will make sense to anyone who has actually seen it. If anyone out there has seen it and knows which one I mean - could you please tell me what it is called? I saw it in Japan and also saw it once on UK tv - but I can't remember the title and would like to have a look at it again.

I know an Australian film called Japanese Story that is about a Japanese man in Australia who falls in love with an Australian woman, but that was released in 2003 so probably not the same movie...
