Given that you`ll be taking an intermediate course, it only makes sense.

I am taking a course at my local International Center, as well I have taken a course before coming to Japan, and the first thing we did was learn hiragana and katakana. Doing the beginner course here, and going to do intermediate this coming year, I found it reallydistracting to go back to roman letters. And once I had remembered words, I had a hard time recognizing them when written in my dictionary (hiragana-english), or in places around school or restaurants etc.
It takes at most 10 hours of focused study and practice to learn the 40-some hiragana, and the same for katakana. It`s really not much. And since we see it every day all around, most if not all JETs should know it by year 2. And anyone taking intermediate Japanese, anyone who is serious about studying Japanese, MUST absolutely know hiragana and katakana.

I think the advanced book gets rid of roman letters altogether - but I`m not quite at that level yet.

This will make the intermediate course much better!

Wait... Not even the intermediate book is in kana? That's friggin' ridiculous.

I stopped doing the CLAIR course halfway through because it was pretty much impossible to learn in romaji. It takes all of a couple weeks to learn the kana, and after that, studying Japanese in roman letters is a HUGE handicap. They're not Japanese and they're the only place we're ever gonna see those words spelled out in English. It got to the point where it was just holding me back. I don't mean to sound so hostile about this course- I signed up for it again when someone told me the intermediate level was written in kana... but I'm really disappointed to hear that it's not. The way this book is written is about as effective for learning real Japanese as Japanese public school curricula are for learning real English.

+1 I literally got the beginner's course through today and I'm already finding the romaji frustrating beyond belief. Even if your Japanese was nil, as mine was on coming to Japan, I don't see how you could have survived for three months without learning any kana. I don't mean to be unappreciative, and I'm impressed by how much was done with the books for free, but it really does seem detrimental to acquiring new vocabulary - especially if you're taking another course alongside it.

The intermediate course is NOT in romaji. But, if I were a beginner jumping from romaji straight to kanji with furigana would be super hard. Perhaps, the first beginner book should have both and then after that strictly hiragana/katakana?

beginners texts usually gradually introduce kanji as per the primary school levels in japan... they would never jump straight into full kanji... seriously...

and its not as if the beginners are true beginners any more, since everyone receives a language course book from CLAIR in the big info pack that comes when you get accepted...

If one is intermediate, then kanji with furigana should be appropriate. The more you see an unfamiliar kanji the easier it is to write it when it comes to that. At least that is my experience. I hate things that are all hiragana. Makes it harder to understand. And even if they replaced only the hiraganas with kanji I know it would still be too much hiragana =/

I agree. But if the last book you used for studying was entirely in Romaji and then you're asked to work from kanji and furigana, it's going to be really hard. I don't think the intermediate needs to be changed, but the beginner course.

Agreed; if you're used to using and reading kana in your day to day life it seems counter-intuitive to study in romaji, especially since you're never going to see the same words typed in romaji script any where other than the book. To be fair, some people might have extremely busy schedules and so wouldn't have had time to sit down and learn kana but then atleast the beginner's book should progress from romaji to hiragana as the lessons go by.

I got my books yesterday but then I'm a prefectural JET, I don't know if that would make a difference?

I think materials were supposed to arrive October 18th, and mine showed up right on time, so I expect you'll get them very soon.

Yup! Mine just came in. Not two hours after I post about it on the forum... I didn't know the JET forum was so powerful, it heard my cries for Japanese study materials!

Also, for those worrying about it, the book says to wait a week from the scheduled delivery date (Oct. 18th this month). If you still haven't received your materials:

1. Check whether a staff member at your place of employment (BOE or main school) received the course materials.
2. Ask your Japanese supervisor to check if a staff member in the mailroom or General Affairs Department (総務といった部門, soumu to itta bumon) received the course materials.
3. Call the Help Line: 03-3263-2024 or Email jethelp@bonjinsha.com.

I got the Beginners language book about a week ago.

I started seeing a Japanese teacher almost as soon as I arrived so I knew most of the basics already. But my main qualm (aside from finding it so difficult to read romaji) is on page 72-73. The Japanese reads:

Jim Miller: Demo, ko-hi- mo totemo oishii desu yo.
Naomi: Sou desu ka. Anou, Jimu-san, Son'ho-san. Watashi wa sorosoro shitsurei shimasu.

And the translation of Naomi's speech is:

Naomi: Oh really? Well, next time I will drink (some) coffee at this shop too. Jim, Sonho, I'll be leaving now. Excuse me.

My Japanese isn't all that great, but I know that "sou desu ka" doesn't hold that much contextual meaning.

You are right... there should be more if they want to say all that about drinking coffee. Can't get all of that just from a "sou desu ka" LOL. the intermediate has some booboos too though. One thing I don't like is the lack of explanation of grammar points. I'm using this as a reinforcement from my previous studies, and I was hoping to see new explanations for grammar points I have had trouble understanding and grasping but there is little to no explanation at all :(
