I suppose what I put was not quite accurate. Stage two isn't so much 'homesick' as a gloom. Feeling like you don't fit, feeling like you try and are turned down at every turn. Yes, some people are more susceptable to it, but I have yet to meet a single JET who didn't go through stage two blues. Obviously you're not sad all the time, or homesick for a month straight... but nerves get short, tempers shorter, and everything, even stupid small shoot, tends to rub you the wrong way. You're quick to be sad or to get angry, and you have a chip on your shoulder that is visible to almost everyone around you, even if you can't see it yourself.

I'm just trying to give a reality check -- it will last longer than two weeks for the vast majority of people.

Yeah and I was just saying I know people who don't really notice it at all. So everyone should just prepare themselves to deal with whatever comes. It'll be different for every single person. Some will notice it in a strong way, some won't. Maybe it's because I had previous experience abroad but I don't remember any particularly bad time. I know others who had it rough but my message is that it does not made you weird to feel as though you didn't go through "culture shock". Everyone is different.

Hi everyone. I'm also applying for 2013 from the UK and even though its still really early I've started making notes that I will use for writing my SOP. I'd rather work on it bit by bit over the summer than have to panic about it when the applications open. Is anyone doing anything over the summer to help with their application?

A couple of us have talked about this quite a bit in the US 2013 Applicant thread, if you want to come join us ^_^ We won't discriminate just because you aren't from the US.

Hey hey! Welcome! Stoked that you'll be applying, and working on the app early. I plan on doing the same thing with my SoP. Will also be slowly gathering other materials during the Summer so that when Fall comes, the app process will be much easier. Ganbatte! We are in this together.

Hey :D welcome to the forums. It awesome to meet new people applying for JET.
I know what you mean about the essays. I hate writing essays for university so writing one for JET will be a nice change if a bit difficult as I feel like I have to analyse myself which is something I normally avoid.

Also you should join us in the aspiring US JETs 2013 post. That one tends to be a lot more active than this one and its not just US people using it. A lot of people from the UK (myself included) have joined in the conversation.

Hello,
I also have questions about applying for the 2013 JET program and since this thread already exists I thought it would not hurt to ask them here. First, I have been looking into TEFL and found that there are online courses available, however I am curious if online is as reputable as in person courses. Could anyone tell me if taking an online TEFL course would help me get accepted to the JET program or should I find a way to take an in person course despite it being more expensive and harder to reach. Second, I already have a bachelors degree in English and plan to have a Masters degree in English by the end of this upcoming school year. My graduates degree is the only reason I have not already applied for the JET program in the past. Will a graduates degree help me with the JET program or will it not matter for this program?

Thank you all for any information.

These questions can usually be answered by reading the JET website and/or past threads. The JET Program application process is like any other; any relevant qualifications you have are going to make you a better candidate. The JET Program does not require TEFL or a Masters, so either of those things could help you stand out, regardless of where you got them. (I say could because honestly, I don't think it's about your education, but rather how you use it.)

Seriously though, just read these forums and you will be opened up to a magical world of JET knowledge.

There was a post on here that essentially said that if you can't get into JET without TEFL, you probably won't get in with TEFL. What this means is that TEFL is worth such a minor amount of the application process that it probably isn't worth it. I tell people that unless you want to do TEFL as a career, don't waste your time doing it.

I'm sure he has already read this in detail. Pretty much everyone finds this forum from that site. So, Darling, if you have something helpful to post then lets hear it. Posting a link to the JET site is just about as rude as telling someone to "google it."
