Just in case you do end up near the affected area or meet someone who was affected (they aren't only in tohoku at jte in Hokkaido lost her whole family) instead of thinking about how sad it is focus on what you can do to make things less sad for them.

Sounds great guys. And by losing my ****, I meant I was absolutely overjoyed. If I only know I'm a prefectural ALT, does it mean I am somewhere on the mainland, or could I still be placed on one of the smaller islands? Not that I would mind, just curious thank you for your opinion!
