Irish JET Applicants 2012

For any other shortlisters, the forms we were given tell us to check out the Citizens Information webpage for details for obtaining the Police Certificates but I found it to be completely unnecessary. I went to the Garda station this morning with a written letter for the district superintendent applying for the police certificate but there's no need for that or a birth certificate. Or a stamped addressed envelope! They just filled out a form and copied my passport and said I'd get the cert in two weeks. Easy as pie.

Wish I had seen this sooner, I also went this morning and was told the SAE and letter weren't necessary
Also, I met Naomie from the JET desk today, she's so friendly and helpful, and recognised me from my picture.

So all I need now is the health check which I have plenty of time for... Yay!

Question: Can any currest Irish JETs give me any tips on banking/sending money home etc...? There is a lot of info for Americans/Canadians but I haven't been able to find anything specific to Irish JETs. Any info/tips you have would be much appreiciated.

i'm American, but just want to say that it seems to me most JETs in my area and JETs in general use Go Lloyds. Lloyds is a British bank, but the service is available to all nationalities i think. certainly i know Americans, Canadians, and Brits who use the service.

i've been a little intimidated/procrastinating about the setup service, so i've just used international money orders from the post office to send home chunks a few times. it's not time effective since i have to fill out a form each time, wait for processing, and then mail the checks and wait for my parents to deposit them for me, but the extra costs (commission, etc.) is roughly the same as Go Lloyds. international money orders are, as the name says international. you just specify the currency you're converting to and pay the yen in addition to a flat ¥2000 fee. from what i've heard the JP Post Bank (which is who changes/processes) gives quite good exchange rates, but as i've been lazy i haven't actually done my homework to backup that claim.

Yay finally everything is coming together! I'm handing in my form tomorrow in person, I feel its just too important to leave it to An Post!

Also, with banking I went into AIB and they have a sister bank over there, haven't got the details on hand but I bet if you go into any bank branch they should have all the details. From personal experience, I found sending money by registered post worked best. Whatever happened when I was transferring money between my Irish and American accounts, I ended up losing a significant amount because of intermediary banking errors. But that was between Ireland and the US, so could be very different!

Also if anyone is in the Dublin area, apparently Michaels in Dun Laoighre have a walk in service for x-rays as long as you have a referral from your doctor for a nifty chest x ray.

We do recommend you get a chest x-ray before travelling to Japan but if your doctor decides that it is not necessary, you can get a letter on headed paper from your doctor indicating that there is no clinical indication that you need a chest x-ray before travelling to Japan.

About banks, your Contracting Organisation will probably arrange all that for you but I personally found Japan Post to be the best as the ATMs are all in English and Japanese. It's nationwide as well so you won't have any trouble using it when you go travelling.

I reckon Go Llyods (not Golly Ods!) is best for sending money home. It's easy enough to do at the ATM and don't charge too much. You might hear about sending money home using the post office but last I heard they don't send to Ireland. I guess we're just too wee.

I wouldn't worry about all these little things for the moment. You'll be told all about it at Pre-Departure Orientation, Tokyo Orientation and your prefecture's orientation.
