If I don't get in....not sure start making plans to go back and get my PhD. Take a vacation somewhere (Japan maybe?)

If I get accepted, I'm going to freak out with excitement, call all of my friends and relatives, and then eat way too much at the local Japanese Steakhouse.

If I don't get accepted, I'm going to sit wide-eyed, staring at the rejection e-mail, and cry. Then I'll sulk, eat chocolate, and eventually let everyone know the bad news. After about a week, I'll start looking for another job (because subbing pays peanuts), and preparing to apply again for 2013!

(let's hope the second option doesn't happen)

I'm trying to focus on the 'getting in' rather than the 'If I don't get in', simply because I can't even deal with the latter right now. I'll get past it if I don't, but it will be such a hard hit to the system.

If I do get in, it will be that feeling of 'Everything has been for this. This was coming. All the years that you have loved Japan, wanted to be in Japan, wanted to learn more about Japan and live that dream--It's HERE.' There will be a DATE, not just 'Someday soon, I'm going to go to Japan. I think it will feel like a dream for a few days, too good to be true--And then the work will begin. I'm so excited for that day, I just have to focus on that Positivity. I think that we all should.

And yes, lots of calling relatives, lots of tears (I'm an emotional person!), lots of nostalgic memories of how much I've worked for this moment, some triumphant music, and yes--Some celebratory Tonkatsu may be in order!

Good luck to EVERYONE! It's almost the fated day!

So, even if we haven't been advised to do so by our embassy, it's ok to start collecting things like the background check and doctor's form now? Or is it important that these things be done in a certain time frame? I've heard it's possible to do some things too early, so just double checking.

I just heard from someone who's coming to my prefecture next month. So I think if you haven't heard anything, then you didn't get it.

I understand that feel.

Personally, I do not want to psych myself out. It's a big deal. I think not getting in will be a severe blow considering the magnitude of the program. But I have high spirits and will try to remain positive these last, few, weeks. I do not know how I will react and I doubt anyone here would. It depends on how emotionally invested you are. I can say I am very invested.

If I do not get in, or if I am alternated, I'll just move on with life as I've done with every other disappointment. But, if I do get in, I'll be the happiest motherf*cker on the planet. Excuse my french.

Yeah, I wondered about this too. I'm just assuming no one in the forums got in yet (if they did, we'd hear it by now imo).

I'm assuming any early departure people who use the forums are probably too busy trying to get stuff in order so they can depart in 2 weeks.
Just a guess, really, but I doubt my last few weeks before I depart (yes, determination, factual assimilation of future possibilities) I'd really be motivated to inform the forums.

But then again, who wouldn't want to share this info to every possible person! Maybe early departure peeps are just being demure about it.

So, I'm wondering about something.

After the interview at my consulate, I received an email telling me to apply for an FBI background check because they take forever to get done. As requested, I went to my local police station, got some fingerprints, printed out a credit card form to fill out, and sent the request to the FBI. That was about three weeks ago. I know that it can take from eight to twelve weeks, but I'm a little concerned because my account hasn't been charged the fee for the check. Is this standard? I mean, I suppose it could be the case that they just leave all of the requests in a stack until the get to them, but I'm surprised they haven't taken my money yet. When I commented on this to my mother, she made mention of how I used my debit card and some institutions only can make use of credit cards (even though I've never been in a position where my money was turned down based on which type of card I used). Even then, I guess I'd be expecting to get a "You screwed up" notification or something. Basically, I suppose I'm asking: When should I be expecting to hear back on my background check? I'm hoping it will be soon enough to allow me to resubmit in case of any issues that may have come up in my request.

I think my card got charged over a month after I sent the application in, and then it took about 2 more weeks before I got it back in the mail. They don't charge the card until the actually process your information, and that step alone seems to be taking a while to get to. I accidentally wrote my card number wrong (mixed up two numbers), so the lady called me. So, if there was an issue with the card or application, I think they might call you. Otherwise, you just wait about 2 months to get your results back, I believe.
