We also have the Naruto whirlpools! Those are cool.

Yeah, there is a city named Naruto... and it's in Tokushima. There are four positions available there for newbies this year!

Also, I don't remember there being any PCs posting on the forums last year, that is awesomely rad. Keep up the good work guys!

For all the new people going to Tokushima, we'll also be getting a new CIR/PA/Overlord this year, so you'll be able to meet them first! Give us the DL from orientation, k?

In eastern Shikoku, we are right underneath Kobe/Osaka/Kyoto, and from Tokushima City you can take a bus to any of those for 20-40$. Takes around two hours.
Beautiful, relaxing inaka life in the countryside! We have cool stuff like Iya (Iye?) Valley, Mt. Bizan (which looks kind of like an eyebrow) lots of coastal beaches, and the LOWEST CRIME RATE IN ALL OF JAPAN.
Also, I am there. So, ya know. 8)

That sounds awesome!!!!!! I can't surf, but it would be cool to learn, and I absolutely love love musicals, have been in plenty myself. If i don't get placed there, I will definitely come visit!!!!!

Oh, how I wish it was April already!

With your icon, I was really hoping you'd be a New Zealand applicant.

I'm scared to ask, but now I gotta know. I've read that some Canadians have already been informed of their acceptance for early departure. Has anybody from/in Ottawa heard back yet?
Will we be informed, if we did not get the early departure date?

I can imagine all of us are feeling the heat so close to notification time, so I hope everybody has found a happy place until then. I sincerely hope that all applicants find a way not to worry so much. Since dealing with an ulcer on liftoff would be a huge pain. ;)

No one who interviewed in Ottawa has been accepted for early departure yet. The JET Coordinators will be contacting all applicants soon to say if they are on the short list, an alternate or didn't pass the interview. Anytime between now and just before the Group A/B departure early departure candidates can be promoted. Try your best to relax; even if you aren't promoted early you are still able to depart with Group A/B.

I have also posed this question to the forum topic about Joining Clubs --> viewtopic.php?f=10&t=10510
but I was wondering if I might get different responses here, also was inspired by the awesome posts about Tokushima.
I am a competitive fencer on the Canadian domestic circuit and I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the fencing circuit in Japan. I have looked into it and know that there has been a rise in popularity since Ota Yuki won a silver in foil at Beijing 2008. I know there are clubs in Tokyo, and most universities have programs too. (apparently there is a university in Kyoto that has a really good program)

I wish I had looked into this more and had had the balls to request something in the "placement request" section. But I felt that unless it was a serious medical thing, no request was really valid... :/

so, my question is to anyone reading from Japan: Is there any fencing (western fencing or escrime for you franco-phones) in or nearby your community? Either at your JHS, SHS or just a community club? I know it's all ESID, but hearing about the existence of clubs makes me happy, and I really want to be able to fence next year. Both competitively, and I am hoping to be able to coach and help foster fencing in Japan! :)

Related question: Before we decide whether or not to accept our placement, are we allowed to talk to a current JET or BoE rep in the area to find out what sorts of clubs/local amenities are available in the area?

You don't get to know your placement until approximately a month after you get the shortlist results. Plus rejecting a position due to placement is a big no-no and you won't be able to apply for JET the following year. Once you get your placement though, your BoE or successor will probably email you with all the information and you can email back with questions :)

@HerrKaiser:
I recall a video (either on YouTube or http://www.jetprogramme.org) where a CIR (might have been an ALT) started a dancing class in her area. Even if you can't join a fencing club, it could be possible to create one! It would also help you pass time if you investigated what kinds of organizing need to be done for such a thing (e.g. appropriate places to order the foils and masks in Japan). You could probably ask your local club how they got started, and generalize their processes (i.e. write down the steps they took, and expect to take similar actions in Japan). If you could get the club started as a school club, then that'd probably be nice, but probably not critical. Surely renting a school gymnasium (or a room at a Recreation Centre) a few nights a week in Japan is about the same as is it anywhere.
