Laptop repairs

Postby boxer » Sun Feb 26, 2012 5:48 pm

My laptop that I bought in the U.S. got a virus today that prevents me from getting on the internet. Is this something that is easy to fix in Japan? Just a simple virus removal. The internet is my life over here so I need to get this problem fixed asap. It doesnt have a Japanese operating system and I dont want to mail it overeseas.

Just find an ALT in your area who knows more about computers than you do. Anybody with half a brain and a bit of experience with a computer can handle something like this, so find somebody smarter than you and ask them for help.

You might be surprised at how few people out there have this kind of knowledge. Ever wonder why Macs are so popular?

OP, Google "antivirus program", pick one, install it, and run the thing. Also, stop clicking on links advertising free porn/valium/other crap you should know better than to try your luck with.

coz there are too many people with money to burn?

Also, might be a simple virus removal. I wouldn't recommend simply doing a search and installing the programs you find. Indiscriminate googling can cause more problems. You might end up with more than one virus... if it is indeed a virus.

I second asking around for help if you're not sure. Could just be a configuration issue or something, let's hope it's not a fault with the actual laptop. I'm of the opinion that there's probably a couple of people in ur prefecture or around you that could assist with this sort of thing... just a matter of how you ask, and how nice they are.

Fair enough. The googling and installing some antivirus wont work since I can't get on the internet though.

i was gonna point that out to trout, but then I realised that you're posting in an online forum about being unable to get onto the internet...

Is this because you are using ur phone to go online? I might recommend checking if your computer (assuming it's a mass produced one) has any reports of network issues and how other people solved it.

Download a free virus scanner like Avast on a different PC. Download the virus definition update file. Put the downloaded files onto a CD or USB drive and install them on your infected PC. If you have no access to another PC then you are out of luck and need outside help. Maybe you can download it to your phone and transfer it across to your PC via USB - no idea what you are using to access the forums.

Bring a flash drive to school/friend`s house and ask to use their computer. Plug in. Google for Combofix/Malware bytes (both are free bleepingcomputer and malwarebytes.org). Install/dl to flash drive.

Run your computer as an admin (if possible) in safe mode (you may need to do without networking). Run programs. You should be good. Safe mode can be entered (I know on most Dells, at least) by hitting F8 at start up, or check your start-up screen to see.

I can`t think of the reg. key cleaner I use, but if Combofix/Malwarebytes doesn`t kick it, you may need to reimage the drive (very last resort) and use a new one and just bring over any of the files you absolutely must have - but this is a very, very worst case scenario.

Can you give us more information? What operating system are you running? Are you sure that it's a virus, and not a network configuration issue? What error are you receiving when you try to use your web browser?

Similar thread with suggestions (including info I posted) that should help: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=10227
Since you haven't posted much info, I won't bother trying to guess what's wrong with your laptop.

I reckon s/he's genuine guys, their signature reads 'jet program'.
