My theatre also offers a ticket book of 5 tickets for 5000 yen so only 1000 yen a movie, which is a good deal. They're only redeemable there, though, but other theatres may have something similar. Oh and 3D is an additional 300 or 400 yen.

Thanks. That makes me feel better. I really like going to the movies, probably once a week.

D:!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's like £14!!! I pay that a month to see unlimited films. u_u;;; I knew it was expensive, but that ridiculous.

That Zac Efron story was from last year so I'm hoping they came to their senses and decided not to torture us any more. I think someone who isn't already a 'star' would be best. As long as it's not Michael Cera too! :P

Depending on the placement i might not be able to go every week... and now knowing the price I probably won't be able even if there's a cinema next to my place.

lol Michael Cera XDDD... that would he hilariously wrong.

I'm so gutted about this film, its released in the UK on the 27th July when I'll probably be spending a couple of my last days in the UK with family. I don't think I'd get away with running out on them to watch a Japanese film when I'm off to Japan a couple of days later.......or would I

Guess it'll be on the DVD shopping list when I get to Japan

I went to the cinema the day before leaving for Japan (HAD to see The Simpsons Movie). It can be done :) But you're right -- 借りぐらしのアリエッティ will be on DVD here in a few weeks, so you can rent or buy it when you get here. (Maybe spring for the DVD -- at about 3,600 yen, it's cheaper than the Blu-Ray at about 5,200 yen!)

If it makes you feel better, you'll be JUST in time to see コクリコ坂から, which opens on July 17th.

Cool, I hope whatever place I'm going to end up being in will still be showing it when I arrive. A good chance to get out of the house and explore the local picture house. I can't believe you wait ages for a new Ghibli film and then suddenly two come along at once!!

Will be on DVD for sure, no blu ray player on my laptop and no point buying a separate blu ray player.

Not totally -- there's quite a disparity in style and technique from director-to-director, genre-to-genre, and era-to-era. That said, I'd be interested in an elaboration on what you mean by "the way that it is filmed" (I don't mean that as a criticism, by the way -- I'm genuinely curious about what makes a film "Japanese" as opposed to, say American, Canadian, British, French, Italian, Korean, Iranian, Chinese, etc.).

For TV dramas, Japanese production values are much lower than US ones. I'll admit it took me some time to not associate "cheap looking" with bad.

Also, I feel that too many of the easy to find Japanese movies are cast with whatever comedians or entertainers are popular. Most of them can't act their way out of a wet paper bag. Or maybe it is just that a lot of the acting styles are archetypal and stylistic making the performances unrealistic.

(I am a huge humor and drama snob. I'm trying to work on it. But I just have so much hate.)

Still, I am guilty of liking some things:

TV:
Nurse no Oshigoto (ナースのお仕事)- I've only seen the movie at rental shops, but this show cracks me up. Mostly comedy, but expect each episode to come with a bit of a heavy-handed moral.

Tokumei Kakari-cho: Tadano Hitoshi (特命係長:只野仁) - ridiculous and full of fan service. But it knows it is ridiculous. Plus, it kinda has a Clark Kent/Superman thing going on.

Movie:
Warai no Daigaku (笑の大学) - Fabulous stage play turned movie. Even if it does star a member of smap.
------------
So sayeth the bosun of the HMS Gunma.

holy crap, I loved Mr. Brain. And im in the middle of Hana Yori Dango Season 2 right now and it's wonderful. You should try Zettai Kareshi. It's like a weird combo of the two--quirky and lovey-dovey. SO GOOD. The episodes are all on mysoju.com

I paid just under 2000 yen to see Avatar in Japan, even with my student discount. They also had the nerve to charge 300 yen for the 3D glasses (which we had to return).

i sort of agree. with the television anyway, it kinda freaks me out. lol but it seems to be similar to how tv looks in other countries as well, so maybe it's just a US thing. lol

9mm Parabellum Bullet!!! yes! 8) the rest of them i've heard of but i can't say i'm super familiar with. they're ok in my book though.
i love Japanese indie rock! but this is probably not the thread to get into that discussion. definitely hoping to go to a couple lives while in Japan, though!

*pfft* That's roughly in line with Sydney pricing, exchange rate pending. The rest of the world is just spoiled ;)

What really freaks me out, however, is the cost of DVD and Blu-Ray movies in Japan. I've seen some stuff push up to and over Y100, 000 for a single film before, although I suppose this is pretty rare. On the other hand, Y50, 000 isn't rare at all. As something of a Blu-Ray convert, I'm really hoping that I can import some stuff from the US without too much hassle.

Regarding Japanese films more directly, I recently re-watched All About Lily Chou-Chou. It's still really mesmorising to look at, and quite brutal in its portrayal of the darkest sides of bullying - even if some of the characterisations get stretched a bit too far. Should probably have been slimmed down a bit, too - that Okinawa bit, it particular, could have been much shorter - but the overall impact isn't at all lost, and it serves as a strange reminder that it really wasn't that long ago that none of us owned mp3 players

Speaking of Japanese movies, has anyone seen Parade (came out Feb. 2010)? A bit strange, but I thought it was wonderful!

There are a lot of things that annoy me about Japanese movies and dramas in general, but for some reason I can never stop watching them :D

Movies:

Ain't No Tomorrows / 俺たちに明日はないッス : I loved this. Great set of slice-of-life vignettes that seems very low-key and relatable.

Dramas:

Proof of the Man / 人間の証明 : Amazing mystery, with in-depth portrayals of its characters. I gotta get the book at some point.
SP : Loved Kaoru's traps. Love the twist in the movies.
Conditions of a Great Detective / 名探偵の掟 : I love the whole meta take on the detective mystery genre. Shows a self-consciousness of the whole genre.
Bloody Monday 1&2 : I love how it steers away from cliched plot devices. Not to say there aren't any cliches, but some things you would expect won't turn out that way. Also Yutaka Matsushige really makes the drama shine as a supporting actor. Also love the way how our heroes outsmart the villains; really shows some clever writing and most importantly, keeps the audience on our toes.

Other TV:

Downtown Gaki no Tsukai Waratte wa Ikenai : Need I say more? Well yes, some of the traps get more and more clever each year!
