Favourite Japanese TV/Movies

Hmm, where to begin...

Music: SOFFet; MEGARYU; Kobukuro; Orange Range; Utada Hikaru; etc. :p

Movies (live action): GO; Crows Zero

Movies (animated): Whisper of the Heart (耳をすませば); Castle in the Sky (天空の城ラピュタ)

Anime: Honestly not a big anime fan, but if I have to choose I'd say DBZ or Case Closed (名探偵コナン)

Manga: Samurai Deeper Kyo

Drama: The only drama I've actually seen all the way through is Hataraki-man because we had to watch it for my Japanese class

Film: Woman in the Dunes, Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Kikujiro, Onibaba

Anime (film): Anything by Ghibli/Miyazaki (but especially Spirited Away), The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and I'm sitting on Summer Wars (hoping to celebrate shortlisting with a viewing), but I think it's gonna' rock.

Anime (series): Chobits, Kamichu (feels like a Ghibli production), When They Cry (just...wow...and ow)

Music: Outside the occasional anime opener/closer I haven't followed much. I would HIGHLY recommend checking out Guitar's Tokyo though. The entire album is sublime. PLEASE do yourself a favor and check this out:

Anyone seen the GANTZ movie? I thought it was decent and am excited to see part 2 that just came out!

As far as favorites go, I really love Ghibli movies and Kurosawa movies. I also like Battle Royale because it's lolarious.

I haven't watched that much Japanese TV, but my favorite show would be Hana Kimi. It is so freakin' hysterical.

Manga: Aria, Azumanga Daioh, Liar Game
Music: Olivia, X-Japan (who I would love to hear more of - their stuff is really hard to get hold of in the UK)

I haven't really seen any Japanese drama. Could anyone recommend me a series to start with? I've been meaning to try it for a while, but am always overwhelmed by the amount of choice whenever I have a look through them, and end up not watching any ; )

A lot of people's first drama was "Hana Yori Dango", it's kinda like the "gateway" drama, but it all depends on what genre you're into.

If you like detective dramas, I recommend "Mr. Brain" and "Boss".

@keiki_hime: Ah, thanks for the recommendation. I'll give that a try. I'm happy with most genres, really. I guess my favourite would be the more serious/depresing romance drama, but I also enjoy more light-hearted comedy type stuff.

If you like the more serious/depressing romance drama, then Hana Yori Dango is for you! Check it out. I've also heard good things about Last Friends but I have not seen it.
As for light-hearted comedy stuff, Hana Kimi is a great one.

Ahhh you beat me to it. Same here, although Genji is pretty cool too.
The best scene for me was the umbrella scene in CZ1. haha.
