With BA at least you could just pay to check in an extra bag on the day for about 50 quid, which was actually a much better option than the shipping option they tell you about at London Orientation. I guess the other airlines do the same thing. You only get one suitcase as standard but they don't stop you from paying for more out of your own pocket. Just remember your gonna have to take into account luggage limits for your travel to your placement from Tokyo (but they also offer shipping from the hotel the night before you travel).
