For example, school materials, cultural materials, stationery, linen, toiletries (especially those that are rare or weak-strength here), storage space, closet space, location to shops, lots of things. I meant more in terms of what your predecessor has left you. I was saved a lot of extra packing because I knew that my predecessor had stocked out the apartment decently on certain things.

Should we wear a suit to the London Orientation?

Must... resist... urge... to make... comment... about... being... government employee...

In fairness, if it's very hot (hey, it's been known!), you probably won't be wearing the jacket, but suit trousers, collared shirt, and tie are definitely the way to go. But do take some casual stuff as well, because you'll probably be wandering somewhere for food and alcohol in the evening. It's still a two-day thing, yes?

I'm afraid you're gonna have to get used to the whole "finding out information at the last minute" deal. This won't be on the UK side... this is totally Japan, everything seems to be last minute! I found out about my flights within a week or two following the London orientation when I was in your position 2 years ago, so as annoying as it may be, you'll just have to deal with it!

Interesting that they're splitting the UK JETs amongst orientation A and B this year... never heard of that before either.

That's because of the Olympics, I imagine.

My graduation is on the 12th July, and it is such a ballache thinking about all these trains, etc that I'll have to get.

Pretty much going through my ceremony, getting my photo taken with the other graduates, then throwing off the robes and heading to London. :|
It's not ideal, but it's what I have to do really. And I'm probably not going to make it for the CIR thing either. :| :x

What's "The CIR thing?" We didn't get anything other than the normal London Orientation...

Oh, apparently there's a session with a former CIR on the 12th, which ends at 4pm. I'll probably get there for about 3:30pm, so, I dunno. :x

Oh, is that part of the Orientation or something separate? If it's the same we had that as well (tbh, for CIRs most of London orientation is spent shut away in a lecture theater on your own...). It was quite useful, and it's nice to have a chance to talk about stuff informally in a small group (it's not so easy to do at Tokyo Orientation) but if you can't make it then I guess you could just ask someone easily enough. You'll get most of the information again at Tokyo as well.

Hi all! The invitation says we should wear a lounge suit to the reception. For girls, is an evening dress okay? According to dress code websites lounge suit is equivalent to cocktail dress for women, but I just want to make sure. Cheers.

Just wear a nice dress or a skirt and blouse - just look nice, it's not a massive deal. No extreme cleavage for goodness sake though. I wore trousers and a blouse because I had to fight my way there on the tube.
