What to bring...

Postby Anigi » Sun Apr 29, 2012 1:16 am

... and what not to bring.

I figured we should make a bit of a list of items we should or shouldn't bring. I see them creeping up in various posts and keeping them in one would probably help for future reference. :D Granted ESID and some peoples needs/wants are different than others and I am sure some items can appear on both lists, so take it as a rough guide. (and by all means keep adding your 2 cents) I will try and edit the top post to keep a running list going ^_^

COMPILED FROM VARIOUS SOURCES/ESID. USE YOUR COMMON SENSE AND PERSONAL NEEDS/TASTES WHEN DECIDING IF THINGS ARE NECESSARY FOR YOUR SITUATION (ALSO YOUR PRED'S ADVICE IF APPLICABLE.)

Items in PINK have been discussed and have strong points for and against. Read the discussions and make your own decision.

Strongly recommended to bring

*Clothes if you wear clothes size 12 and up (women)
*Deodorant (deodorant in Japan seems to be weaker, antiperspirant can be found in some pharmacies)
*Aleve (double check if it is allowed first, I know some over the counter medicines are illegal in Japan, anyone know which ones?)

    * tampons/sanitary napkins (to tie you over till you find a suitable replacement)

There is already a Packing and Preparations topic. Try looking there first.

Fair enough, I have seen that thread along with a few others that have mentioned these things, but I thought it would be good to have it all in one easy post which could be edited as items are added. Like a quick go to reference.

Though I see the point of not having another thread cluttering up the boards with information that is already out there. So my apologies, it seemed like a good idea at the time. ;)

I actually kind of agree with Anigi, so long as he/she were willing to keep the top post updated. It would be nice to just have a single check list of things to bring/not to bring all in one place. I see no problem with the double thread, provided Anigi goes through the Packing and Prep topic and adds stuff that has already been listed, rather than just soliciting it again here.

Does that make sense?

Or, if we do want to cut down on clutter, then maybe MiraPira, who started the Packing and Prep thread, might be willing to make a list at the top of the post.

I'm totally down with updating as items are found. But on the same note if MiraPira if up to updating their original thread that is cool too. :D

Cheers Angi, good thread, and would be cool if you updated it for us all. Perhaps poach all of the ideas from that other thread to get started

Done and done, I pruned out what I could from the other threads and will keep on it. There may be a chance I missed something, I mean it is a lot of text and discussion in there :P so if I did please let me know ^___^

Great idea. I like having a complete list all in one place.

I've heard someone on here mention that it might be a good idea to pack bug bite cream, because when we first arrive in Tokyo, mosquitos will be in full force...
Also, if Aleve is your favorite OTC painkiller, you may want to pack some, because from what I've heard, it is not available in Japan.

Anigi, if you have time, you may want to mine the general advice for new JETs thread as well (viewtopic.php?f=26&t=11284)

You're awesome for doing this. =)

Japanese make up is often the wrong tone for western skin

and also any moisturisers tend to have skin whitener in them

so if you have a preferred brand bring them
Kobe City JET from Melbourne Australia

Along the same vein of with what takoyaki said....sunscreen!! I am pale and need to plaster that stuff on! From what I've heard the stuff in Japan is very watery and usually comes with a skintone whitener mixed in. I plan on bringing a decent amount and getting mum to post me some if I run out haha.

2 prong is the norm, so head to your local hardware store and get some adapters. You shouldn't need the expensive voltage ones for laptops or whatever. It should say on the brick the range of voltages it accepts.

On that note don't bring:
hair dryer
curling iron
hair straigtener/flat iron
or any other small appliance that doesn't have a power cord with a brick. They won't work here, and it's not worth it to get voltage converters. You can buy anything of that nature that you need here.
