I figured I'd throw out the same offer as Gekishinken; I applied through and interviewed with the New York consulate, so I might have had a slightly different experience. if anyone has any questions, I'd be happy to help any 2013 applicants!

dazedandconfused, I think that you definitely have some things that will improve your chances. I definitely wouldn't say it's a guarantee, having lived in Japan, but living in Japan gives you a TON more international/intercultural experience and depending on what you've been doing you will have helped more sections of your application. So, yes, I think that your chances will be better, but it largely depends on your SoP and references.

Also, I know that there are people still doing SoPs and whatnot, just wanted to say that my offer to read SoPs still stands. I am bored out of my mind without a job or school; it's awful. So yeah, if anyone wants some feedback, I need something to do. I've written like 15 different versions or sections of my own already... Going crazy with boredom -.-

dazedandconfused why don't you just try to get a job with a dispatch company or eikaiwa? It would probably strengthen a JET application. One of my interviewers at Chicago got rejected from JET their first time applying, went to Japan and worked for an eikaiwa for a year and then reapplied to JET and got in.

this.

i'm not sure what your inaka levels are or how your BoE works, but several hire privately contracted ALTs as well as JETs. the private ALTs at my BoE have neay identical contracts with only a few differences. check out your husbands BoE or BoEs in neighboring areas.

I know some people (spec. those going through the Miami Consulate) have received hard copies of the GIH. Will we all be getting copies in the mail at some point before departure? I'm with the NY consulate. Just curious as 1) getting mail is exciting, especially from JET and 2) reading books is so much better than squinting at PDFs!

Well, this thread is directed at people applying this year, not people who have gotten in. However, from what I read in other places, I believe everyone should be getting a hard-copy of the GIH and whatnot.

Sorry guys! I'm getting the 2013 and 2012 threads confused!!

Thanks guys. That's really nice of you but you may come to regret it with all the questions we all likely have. :D

Congrats on getting on the course. I think it'll be a big help.If I had the funds I'd look into doing one too.

.

I think I'll take you up on this offer when I finally turn my list of things to include into an actual essay. I keep saying I'll do it tomorrow but instead end up doing other things. I swear I'll start it on Monday when theres no one in the house to distract me

Write it when you feel ready to write it. its got to come from you and express who you are. There's the whole summer to do it so maybe make some notes of things you'd like to say within it and when you're ready put it all together. :) Make lists, lists are awesome!

I think its going to be really hard for me to do. I'm not a person who generally likes to talk about themselves but since thats what stands between myself and JET, I will give it my best shot.
I have so many lists I think I need a list to keep track of them all. :D I keep making them in work to pass the time

If any UK JETs in particular have questions about applying then send me a PM and I'll answer as best I can! I was interviewed in London so anyone applying there will probably get the most accurate answers :)

Welcome s4078131! Glad to have you ^_^ I added you to the list

And all of you are so nice for offering assistance!

And I know the SoP stuff is so crazy and hard; the reason I have so many versions and so many pieces is because every time I think of anything, I write it down (or I try to anyways). I'm trying to make sure I hold onto all of my different inspirations. I think that introductions and conclusions are the hardest because they really need to capture who you are and capture the attention of the reader (too many Pokemon jokes because I pictured them as the masterball of the paper). But, I'm an intuitive writer when dealing with my own work. I can edit the insides, generally, but I can't seem to really edit my starts or finishes; they either work or they don't, no other options.

I think many people over think when it comes to the SoP. I'm not gonna post mine in case someone plagiarizes it but an outline of how I did it was this:

First Paragraph - A summary of what the rest of the essay is going to say, as well as my first experience with Japan.
Second Paragraph - Why I think I would be a good teacher and why I want to go to Japan.
Third Paragraph - Why I am applying to JET.
Final Paragraph - What I hope to add to and get from JET.

That probably sounds really brief and vague but hopefully it can help some of you who are struggling.

One thing I want to add as a note...it's debatable as to whether it is a good or bad thing, but if you love anime my personal opinion is that you should probably limit discussing it in your SoP.

Hey, just a thought, but would any of you guys be up for a JET's 2013 facebook group? Might be easier to chat etc. than sifting through all these forums all the time. :)
