Want to be a JET

Postby leandrombps » Sun Mar 04, 2012 3:29 am

Hi, i live in southern Brazil and would like to know how can i become a JET. I believe that the culture must be shared between our nations. Thanks so on.

Well, if these forums are anything to go by, you need to:

- First, get your application done and sent off in time.
- Then start reading the forums for advice, through which, you will eventually start to think of all the possible things that you have done wrong.
- Start forgetting all Japanese language ability (if any).
- Against all conceivable odds, you'll receive a letter inviting you for an interview, where you completely screw up, talk crap and sweat everywhere for about 20 minutes. It is important to come out of the interview feeling terrible.
- For the next few months until the results are released, think of as many things that you can worry about, prepare everything and nothing, and generally convince yourself you will never get into JET, while still clinging on to hope. This last bit is tricky, as you need to carefully balance optimism with the crushing weight of pessimisstic realism.
- Get accepted into JET, go out there, and realise nothing is like what you ever imagined. You find this to be an unsettling but strangely exciting experience, and then tell all the other members of this forum about how bad you thought your application was.

That's what I've learnt so far, anyway. Hope this helps.

First off Brazil is not a country that typically sends JET participants. I checked the PDF and there are only 15 Brazilians in JET (there are roughly 4,000 people total). Brazil has no JET ALTs, only CIR. From my understanding if you decide to apply a Japanese location has to REQUEST a Brazilian for you to even be considered. In addition, CIR is a position that basically requires a relatively high level of Japanese language ability. I am not trying to ruin your dream, it's just that Brazil is not a country that has a strong JET presence. I suggest calling the Japanese embassy/consulate closest to you and asking them for more information.

Love these two posts so much.
histgirl wrote:And again, if you want to do JET because you love Japan and not because you love teaching/children, please don't come. There are enough ALTs bad at their job that are wasting taxpayer money already. JET is not a free ticket to Japan.

Basically this, except with a lot less sarcastic hilarity and a lot more truthiness.
