When I was on JET, 95% of the time I left school and walked the few blocks to the cluster of restaurants around the train station and ate there. 5% of the time I ate at school, sometimes in the teachers' office, but usually in the cafeteria with the kids. I typically ordered a bowl of ramen, which wasn't very good but was quite inexpensive, at least.

I was under the impression that you couldn't just leave school grounds for lunch. Is this an ESID thing as well?

Yes, it is. I knew of others that had the same option, and some where the schools didn't really want them to leave but didn't put up a fuss if the JET did now and then. If your school let's you do it, I'd advise that you check before you leave to see if you'll have a class to teach in the period after lunch, and don't be late getting back if you do. As long as I was careful about that, and didn't go any further than the couple blocks walk to the restaurants around the station, they were fine with it.
