Hi thought I'd also comment as there are lots of kiwis on this thread :) I was interviewed in Wellington and thought overall it went well. Just slightly worried about the part where you had to turn the paper over that was next to you and read out the sentences, then correct them. I may have tripped up on that "banana's" sentence... can't really remember what it was but yeah... haha not sure if everyone got the same sentences or what...

Just kind of annoying re-thinking the interview over again and again... trying to push it out of my mind but is difficult :( Sure some of you are the same though?

I got it WRONG!!

at the end of my interview, they said:
"Your personality makes you a good fit for JET....BUT...you might not.........something something.......your grammar..........something something something......." (honestly my mind already went blank.............)

the stupid bananas..........

guys.....goodbye...I hope you guys have fun in Japan

P.S. My interview:
1. General Q&A (why JET, why JAPAN, why placement, where did you hear about JET? why teaching? Dealing with isolation, dealing with your school, dealing with children)
2. 2 minutes class mock up (no preparation time)
3. The grammar paper (correcting common errors in sentences)

Did they actually comment about your grammar at the end of the interview? That seems kind of odd... Anyway I would still hold on, don't dismiss getting to go just yet, you still have a chance!

Yeah stupid bananas... I remember saying the apostrophe shouldn't be there... but I honestly can't remember the sentence and if I was wrong or not.... arghhhhhhh I felt like the rest of my interview went great, it was just those dumb bananas! :(

Don't worry it's not an eikaiwa interview. Maybe they did that to scare you into reviewing grammar and improving your own English so that if you do get in you will be better prepared?

wow!!! that's kinda harsh to say at the end of the interview-kinda brings your mood down!!!
I hope you still get in!

bananas are not dumb in general-lots of potassium! but in this case they are!!!

here in canada, i didn't have a grammar section, and I am a non-native English speaker. But there was a "sample lesson" part- "how would you teach this" kinda of thing

In Ireland we didn't have grammar or a sample lesson - this seems to be the case for most I've talked to; although a couple of people were asked the structure of a sentence verbally but we didn't have a worksheet or anything.

Oh sorry to hear about your interview, I had that piece of paper in my interview too (Wellington) luckily for me I must have looked a little uncertain when I finished and they told me I got 100% (cue laughter from interview panel to ease my nerves). I wasn't really prepared for a grammar 'test' (thought the UK was the only place to have that privilege) so it threw me a wee bit.
Also Moonlight_kit they may have commented on your abilities and limitations at the end to try and rattle you? I agree with AVNicholls. Isn't personality mostly what they look for in JET? Oh and when you first wrote about the banana(')s I thought you were talking about me hahaha....oops

lol I honestly can't can't remember the exact sentence, if I did I would happily share! All I know was it contained "banana's" and there was something wrong with the sentence that had to be corrected... :/

When you mention a 'grammar test' my immediate thought was, "How am I going to explain a gerund-phrase to an interview panel? Oh man I need to crack out my fundamentals textbook so I can do the SVO tree/house thing..."

And then I relaxed, and everything was amazing.

All the Calgary JET interviewees should have received an email describing the Interview as such:

"The interview will be conducted by a three member panel and last approximately 20 minutes. It will include a small role-play. Bear in mind that you are applying for an assistant language teacher position and you should be able to anticipate likely topics. If you have indicated any Japanese ability, it will also include a very brief evaluation of your Japanese level (Japanese is NOT required for the ALT position, however, so do not let this section worry you). If time permits, you will also have an opportunity to ask questions."

I am posting this on the off-chance that people have deleted the email or not gotten it. Let that put all the Calgary interviewees at ease!

Relax! Oftentimes people blow this interview out of proportion because it is a job in another country. Relax and keep calm!

ご幸運を祈ります。!

haha well the NZ interviews are well and truly over so I guess it's safe to say (and we didn't sign anything telling us not to talk) it was a sentence like "all of the banana's were eaten' or something similarm, it was one of 6 sentences and you had to say if any of them had errors and what they were, the bananas one was the apostrophe, so little and yet so important.
