any Canadians in the Shigoku area??

small question though, I've noticed that some people already know which shi they're going, but in my letter it only states that I got placed in Tokushima-ken, but doesn't say anything more in detail. Should I expect more information soon? Or is something missing?

At first I was a bit dismayed at not having been placed in any of my picks at all (all three were in Kyushu)
But after reading about Shigoku for a bit, I'm actually quite pleased with my placement!! Sounds like a fantastic place!

Welcome to Tokushima! I'm a fellow Canadian currently living in Tokushima city. Don't worry about not knowing where in Tokushima you'll be yet. There are a lot of great placements here and I'm sure your predecessor will be in touch soon. If you have any questions feel free to jump over to the regional information thread and ask, or find us on facebook (just look for "current tokushima jets")

I'm really happy here. Tokushima is close enough to Osaka and Kobe that you can go for a weekend, but also has enough to do closer to home as well. And Shikoku has the 88 temple pilgrimage if that strikes your fancy. Looking forward to meeting you!

Congrats to everyone on their placements. I'm a bit confused about mine. My contracting organization and placement location is Tokyo-to. I've heard there are some islands that fall under Tokyo's jurisdiction and I'm wondering if anyone knows if Tokyo-to would mean I'm in Tokyo on mainland Honshu or if it's impossible to tell based on the info I was given. Either way I'm extremely excited. I didn't even have Tokyo as any of my preferences, but I'm down with that.

Yeah as far as I know Tokyo-to = Islands
Though apparently this person got a mainland placement

Ah, okay. Thanks. When they tell me which one, I'll start looking for fellow JET's going to the same place, if any. I'm excited to go anywhere in Japan, but it's kind of strange to ask me if I'll accept a placement in Tokyo and then after the fact tell me I'm going to an island. Either way, it'll be an adventure.

Not really. They said Tokyo-to, which is everything in pink on this map:
https://maps.google.co.jp/maps?q=Musash ... TF-8&hl=ja
If you look there is a large area of the city which is pink and the islands. It's not a trick it's just the way it is.

Thanks for the info. Didn't mean to insinuate it was a trick if that's how it sounded. Just trying to justify my hope that I might actually be placed in Tokyo.

Yeah but it's not likely, especially as someone already got a mainland placement and that's SUPER rare... Chances are island.

Friendly advice, prepare for the islands. Then if you get them it will be as you expected. If you don't it'll be amazing!
Don't let yourself hold out hope for mainland and end up going into the situation on a low note.

Good advice. Since your first message I've been looking into some of the islands and learning a little about what experiences they might offer. I never even wanted Tokyo or even requested a specific area, but when I received the message about my placement I started getting really excited about it. From what I'm seeing, it's not hard to get excited about the islands either. Weekends by the ocean...lovely.

That's the best thing to do. I've heard island placements can be really special

Any other Canadianese going there?

Hello, I came to Okinawa just a month ago as an early departure JET. I'm from Calgary. So far I love it here!! There are tons of JETs leaving so I expect more ppl would be coming. There are some other Canadians in Okinawa but I haven't met them yet as everyone is pretty spread out. I am the only JET in my town. But each town is small and driving is convenient so meeting up is never a problem. I just have one thing to say, be prepared for the weather. It is sooo hot, like nothing you would ever experience in Canada. I used the AC in April...

Sounds great guys. And by losing my ****, I meant I was absolutely overjoyed. If I only know I'm a prefectural ALT, does it mean I am somewhere on the mainland, or could I still be placed on one of the smaller islands? Not that I would mind, just curious.

Speaking of prefectural ALTs and such, if you're placed in -shi (Kobe-shi, Kobe-shi in my case), does that also mean you're prefectural and likely SHS, or...? I haven't been given any other information besides the name of my city, so I was just curious for anyone who might know or wants to weigh in? :)

I'm in Sendai-shi, which is kind of comparable to Kobe-shi, in that both are "designated cities" in Japan. We're considered to be different than other JETs in the same prefecture, who aren't in the city. So that means that even though Sendai is the capital of Miyagi, I'm in a different organization/category/classification from JETs placed elsewhere in Miyagi-ken and from prefectural Miyagi-ken JETs. I'll probably still end up with JHS, from what I understand. Basically, we're not prefectural JETs, since we already know our specific placement -- it just happens to be a large city rather than inaka.

Also, apparently Kobe-shi has over 100 JETs, so if you look in the Regional Information subforum, there might be a section just for Kobe, in addition to one for Hyogo-ken.

Hey jialian, I've been placed in Sendai-shi too. There are over 100 ALTs in Kobe-shi? Wow. Any idea how many are in Sendai? I think you said in another post that you are in Vancouver? I've also applied through the Vancouver consulate but I live in Victoria so I won't be at any of the pre-departure events other than the seminars on the 23rd and 24th. It'll be cool to meet up before we arrive in Japan.

OOOH, 00J, I live in Victoria too!!!! And technically, the seminars on the 23rd and 24th are the only pre-departure vents before Aug. 3 in Vancouver, except for the Japanese lessons of course? Are you gonna take the classes in Camosun? It would be cool to meet my fellow JETs there(although of course I will, it's a JET only class!!!!)

On another note, I do not have placement yet, as I am an upgraded alternate. Anyone have an idea when i might find out( I was upgraded on May 4th)?
