For these two documents (criminal record and health certificate) that I am planing to bring to the interview, will I also need to make 2 additional photocopies just like how it was instructed in the application process?

You do not need to, I can make the additional copies for you.

Ditto! I'm still waiting to hear when my interview is... Until then I'm going to prepare like a madwoman! I'm hoping the candidate card comes via email though because I just moved and am terrified that important paperwork will get lost in the mail! :/

Oh ow! Did you put in the change of address card at Canada Post or that thing that forward all your mail from the old to the new address?

I still haven't heard anything and it is offically february. I need to know soon!!!! The Vancouver applicants didn't have toreply to the notification e-mail, unless we weren't going right?

Correct.

Hello,

is it normal to not have received the full information regarding the interview? I got the email and was phoned to set up a time (14th 1:40pm) but the confirmation email for the date as well as the direction (McGill University was the only direction and its huge) were not given.I recall the person who phoned me said I should receive those by the 3rd but that was Friday.

edit: email mention 3rd Feb for setup appointment and to contact if nothing by the 6th so I guess there is still time.

I got a phone call a few weeks ago with the same information as you (through Montreal JET Desk) and still haven't heard back so I just sent an email today asking if a location (building, room number) had been determined for the interview.

I'm assuming we will hear back from them on Monday or sometime this week. Good luck with the interview!

That's my best guess off the top of my head so more like:

200 000 - 240 000 a month, maybe more depending on the season and your bills.
The 200 000 is for higher rent, the 240 000 and up would be for subsidized/free rent.

So you'll be getting 280 000 a month.
Then you minus around 8000 for tax, unless your CO sets you up to do it at the end of the year all in one go. At my old job I had to do it at the end but arrange to pay it over several payments.
Then you minus rent. You can imagine this is 0 - 50 000 yen.
Then you minus water, gas, and electricty which will vary wildly from month to month and town to town. But let's say between 10 000 at the best (low usage and low price) and 20 000 at the worst (though factors could make it higher). Also I have heard of a few, not common, who have these bills subsidised.
Then you minus extra bills like car, internet, phone, cell phone and any other you may wish to tack on. These vary so wildly I won't even bother.

Were those questions about placement and students for both Businesstime and I or only Businesstime?

280,000 is much more than I get per month after taxes, pension, and insurance is removed. I end up with about 265,000. Then there is still bills, rent, and groceries. My guess is that new ALTs will make about 200,000 or so after tax, but I guess we can wait and see what people end up getting. 200,000 is still a good amount, and you could probably save 50,000 yen/month if you wanted.

The 280 000 is before taxes bills etc (also you don't pay taxes you're subsidized for them)
You get 300 000 after taxes and before bills etc.
Your successor will make approximately 20 000 less than you every month. They will also take home 7000 less yen from taxes(unless they are American).

Hey everyone! I got myself pretty excited reading this thread. I have received confirmation that I'll be interviewing on the 17th in Halifax. Yayyy.

My name's Lynn I was born in Quebec but grew up in PEI, went to St. Thomas University(STU) studied poli sci and environment & society with a minor in Japanese studies. I spent a semester in Sapporo, Hokkaido (and yes, it is awesome- but I didn't spend the winter there haha!) in 2010. I also initially got interested in Japan from stuff like Pokemon and Love Hina but have since developed my interests in it. When I was in Japan I danced in the Sapporo Yosakoi Soran Matsuri and got exposed to lots and lots of karaoke :D JET is something I've wanted to do ever since I read the hilarious "I am a Japanese school teacher" blog.

I'm freaking out preparing for the interview making up example questions and doing lots of research on history/current affairs/culture etc. I think this is a really good resource to get an idea of the kind of preparation you should be doing thought I'd share it: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p ... 5BAF477FB0 and http://constantineintokyo.com/2009/07/0 ... questions/

Anyone else applying from the Maritimes? I heard there are a couple other STU applicants but don't know them.

Congrats to everyone who got interviews, and good luck!

I have to get the ferry over from NL and i'm sure you know haw finicky the weather can be around here. I am also interviewing on the 17th. What time is yours? Mine is at 3pm.

Good Luck and will maybe see you there?

Hi,
I just wanted to double check, but for the two documents (criminal record check and certificate of health) we only need to bring those documents to the interview or submit it by the end of February if we are applying for the early departure, correct? If we are applying to leave with the regular group, we don't need to hand these in just yet, but at a later date?
Thanks!

That is correct! I had to double check the forums myself a couple of times, but even in my interview details letter it sates the following:

Candidates who have opted for a possible early departure (April and prior to
Group B Departure - August 4, 2012), may submit their Police Record Check
and Certificate of Health in a sealed envelope, with "Attention: JET
Programme" and their first and last name clearly printed on the outside, to
the interview reception desk. Alternatively, early departure candidates
must submit these documents by mail or in person, no later than February 29,
to the Consulate General of Japan in Vancouver. Candidates who did not opt
for possible early departure should not submit these documents at interview
time. You will receive instructions regarding these documents when the
interview selection results are announced.

Kevin,
If you didn't get the information I would suggest contacting the JET Desk in your area to make sure they have the most up to date contact information for you.

Greetings, fellow Canadians!

It's getting to be that time of year again, with JET interviews and placements on the horizon... so I'll be checking these forums regularly from now on to offer any helpful advice that I can.

I'm a first-year JET, so 12 months ago I was in your shoes. Please feel free to ask me anything about my personal experiences. I'll try to answer your questions to the best of my recollection.

Hope I can help! d(^.^o)
