Well, this will mark my first post in the JET forums!... I figured it was about time I stopped lurking, to say that I am so excited about receiving the email letting me know I will be interviewed in Montreal. At least the first stressful waiting period is over; time to enter the second, I suppose. Good luck and congratulations to everyone who has received an interview notification as well, and hopefully without sounding condescending I really hope all those who maybe did not make it this time around succeed in the following year!

Ah, I was so happy I nearly cried. I then proceeded to tell everyone I know, even people who were calling me for completely unrelated reasons.

Heya Victoria friend! I finished my degree in English last year at Uvic! I'm relieved to hear that us West coasters haven't heard anything. Here's to another sleepless night!

I love reading everyones motivations for going! :) As for why I want to go to Japan, I was an exchange student in Gifu-shi in high school, which naturally has propelled my hope to return as an English teacher. I too initially fostered my interest in Japan through Sailormoon & Escaflowne, as well as other anime and manga. While in Japan I really enjoyed learning the language, and found the cultural differences to be fascinating. I can not wait to go back and experience life on the other side (as a teacher, rather than student). Fingers crossed!

ESCAFLOWNE IS AWESOME~~!!~!

ESCAFLOWNE ROCKS MY SOCKS!!!!

A responsce to an earlier question: my motivation for going is multi-fold. I love history and culture and Japan is rich in both, and many of its cities combine the things i love-modern inovation and traditional culture and history. Just like many people, my interest in Japan grew out of pop culture-anime, manga, and other movies. Nonetheless, I am not just going to Japan to join the Otaku culture, cosplay all day long, and buy cheap anime. I want to travel and explore new places, and it won't be financially possible for me to do so for a few more years. The JET programme would provide not only a valuable international work experience, but an exciting oppurtunity to explore and integrate into a new and fascinating society/culture.

Hi Pamela! I'm from Victoria too! I also have a friend in the Linguistics department at UVic, maybe you know her. She just came back from a year-long exchange in China

Btw, does anyone know if we have to bring our criminal record and health certificate to the interview or mail it latter?

I'd also like to know when we should have these documents ready. I thought I remembered reading somewhere that they had to be submitted before June but I can't seem to find the information anywhere on the application. If anyone knows the exact date it'd take a lot off my mind. I'd hate to get this far only to be disqualified for being late with the criminal record check and health certificate.

We only have to send in our criminal record check and health certificate if we successfully make it through the interview process and are shortlisted/alternates. So no need to worry about it yet. :)

I might know her, although I can't think of anyone who's been to China off the top of my head...

Other Victoria people, I'll also be going over to Vancouver the night before. Don't want to trust the ferries to run the day of, what with potential bad weather conditions and all. I'm planning on staying with someone I know, but I would be up for carpooling to the ferry.

Her name is Brittney, just in case

I have no car so I can't offer a ride to anybody, but if I am going over the night before, I would like to join a carpool if there is one. I hope they notify us of the times soon, so we can figure this all out.

Are you sure? Because I think somewhere on the application, it says that they have to be submitted by the end of february. Or is that just for the April early departure?

Just for early departure.

If you check out the JET Timeline you'll see that it says we submit our health check in May. As for the criminal record check, according to this thread, it was due on June 30 for last year's Canadian applicants.

I fairly certain that I am selected for the Vancouver interview.

I believe this happened because I made 2 on-line application accounts. My first account had technically difficulties and I was afraid that it may not be fixed in time before the due date, so I created and copied my application into the second account. It appears that both accounts were submitted.

It was a horrible gut-wrenching feeling when I first opened and read the second (not selected) email.

Yikes! That would be crazy.

OttawaPC: Can I just say I am very happy to hear that you've started sending rejection e-mails as well.
I can say as a matter of fact, having not made it through the first time I applied years ago, that those two weeks between when my friend got the email and I waited for the letter were AWFUL. Especially as many people who knew how things worked were sure I'd get in and I did, obviously, but not that year. I spent two weeks checking my spam, trash, etc...
So good on the programme :)

does any Jet coordinators know generally the percentage of people that get pass the interview stage? i heard getting an interview is hard. As long as we don't majorly screw up during the intervirw, are we well on our way to Japan?

I'm gonna say it...I'm gonna say it!!! ....ESID. Bwahahaha the words you'll hate sooo much when you get through to Tokyo orientation.

I know for last year, in Winnipeg, a LARGE amount of those interviewed went through to be shortlist (and two that were 'bumped' up in time for the orientation anyways).

But then for other Canadian consulates, and especially other countries, the numbers were different. I'd be curious to hear if the people accepted were a specific % with each consulate, but it didn't seem so last year. Just do your best, dress your best, and don't freak out! Regardless of what people say, the interviews were never that scary. Just show the best side that you can. :)

Oh, and it'll never hurt...start practicing a short all-japanese introduction about yourself. Even if you don't use it in your interview, you're gonna use it 30 or more times over in your first 2 weeks on the job!

I'm wanting to apply as a Tokyo assistant for the arrivals this Summer so hopefully I'll get a chance to see y'all there.
