Don't get your hopes up for any news within the next week. I did last year and we were waiting for a hell of a long time, April 20th to be precise. I know there was the Tsunami last year but that didn't affect the program that much. I initially though that it would seeing as there would have suddenly been a lot of people looking to go home, therefore freeing up more spaces for CLAIR do dole out. The thing is though, I talked to a Fukushima JET that I met in a hostel in Hokkaido and he said that they didn't get any new JETs, so that rules out that theory.

Even then, I didn't find out my placement until early June and in fact that was thanks to the Kobe BOE being nice enough to tell us early. Most of people didn't find out until mid-June.

Anyway, for those of you who are lucky, the Tokyo Orientation are as follows:

Saturday, the 28th of July 2012 - Wednesday, the 1st of August 2012.

Given that timeline, I'd say that your flight to Japan should be about the 26th of July.

Other than that, if anyone wants to ask a year one JET any questions, I will gladly oblige.

Is it possible to get short-listed and then not match anywhere? You know, just to give me something else to worry about.

You get shortlisted, but you don't get matched to a prefecture placement. That is, you get short-listed but a BOE doesn't hire you.

Apparently it's rare... so ignore my paranoia.

ERK! :( that would be devastating. Worse than not being accepted in the first place. Glad to hear it's rare!!

If you get shortlisted, it does mean you have a place. The embassies just say it to cover their backsides in the one potential case where they might not have one, but the numbers of those coming and going are checked time and again so I wouldn't worry about that. You're more likely to be turned down your place in Japan if your health check and garda screening don't check out.

Also guys, don't expect an answer for another 3 or 4 days at the very least. The coordinator sent us an email saying that all our letters were in the post as soon as she sent them, so I wouldn't be rushing down to scare the postman until you get that. However, I was in your place two years ago and I also ignored the sane advice and scared him anyway.

Cheers for the info, Temujin!

The one thing I would mention that might result in a different notification timetable is that they said they'll have some positions for people who are willing to travel on much shorter notice. During my interview they mentioned that if we indicated we wanted early placement we could be notified early April and shipped out before the end of the month.

Of course, that Early April is old news at this point, so I still imagine we're not going to find out till closer to 20th April as you mentioned.

we're still in single-digit dates!! even in Japan, we're still in the first week of April. how is that not Early April?!? though i guess you must mean that notification will not come during that time, which is fair enough.

i think you guys should just anticipate mid-late-April, so when it comes earlier than you've expected, you'll be happy rather than agonizing over each day. :P

Major panic yesterday- we got post (did anyone else get post on Good Friday??) and my Mum rang me saying I had a strange envelope delivered for me. I have yet to get home to work out what it is but I'm guessing since the forums are quiet no one else got anything. Phew.

Why not just let your mum open it?

Maybe it's just me who's fine with my mum opening my mail right now (because I'm not living at home).

Irish JET Applicants 2012

Postby hatefulsandwich » Mon Apr 09, 2012 12:23 am

This might be a bit grouchy of me and sorry to hijack the Irish thread - the South African one has sunk to the bottom of the sea - but I keep reading about people waiting for their postmen, yet I was certain that all these notifications and things had moved firmly into the digital age. Do people still only get snail-mail notifications anywhere? I would have thought with the poor reliability of post that e-mails would be the first line of communication (apparently people will often get a physical letter as well, mind). So it begs the question: WHY is everyone getting panicky and stalking their postmen? I'll get worked up when I see an e-mail referring to JET, but I'll be damned if I could be bothered watching out for snail-mail.
