I requested Echizen, Fukui because of the sister city relationship of the city where I attended university. Sadly, my own city doesn't have a sister city in Japan, but Echizen sounds like a great place from what I've read. As for my other preferences, I put down semi-urban because it seems to be the best of both worlds.

I got to choose my interview date, so I chose the 20th because I'll be off work for President's Day. It makes it rather easy for my schedule. Plus, I'm hoping that having my interview early in the week will help show my enthusiasm.

Has anyone received anything in the mail from the NY consulate yet? I wish we could schedule online like a lot of the other ones..!

I requested Fukui as first choice as well :D ...future BFFs? XD hahaha. Also didn't put a preference for inaka or city or anything. Fukui City in Fukui is my city's sister city, and i remember the japanese students in junior high visiting us from fukui so i thought it'd be cool to be placed there, see the flip side (well, more reasons than just that obviously...see the fukuiraptor! XD haha) ^___^ Also requested Akita and Hyogo :3

Frankly I'd be happy anywhere as well and also adapt fairly well :D I think all different parts and climates of japan all have different merits worth investigating, so cold or hot, I'm down, and I've never been there so exploring a new region will be awesome regardless :) The whole of Japan is filled with history and I'm a nut for that as well as others, and there's so many different things to see in different parts of the country so it's like, bring it on :D

It's so funny to see so many people saying they don't want Hokkaido, as that is my number one choice. Though, I don't blame you guys, it's freaking freezing in the the winter. But, the snow is lovely and the snow festival is AMAZING. Anyway, I picked Sapporo, Hokkaido, and Okinawa as my three choices. Mostly because I have significant people in those places whom I would like to live near. But, if I end up somewhere else in Japan, I won't mind too much. At least I'll be in the same time zone and I would able to more easily travel to see them if I want.

It's weird that when I chose my placement requests, I didn't even consider weather. I just picked the places I found the most interesting (Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, and Hyogo). All three of those places happen to be in the middle to southern part of Japan. I like living in areas that experience all the seasons equally. Just out of curiosity, does Hokkaido experience much of a summer, or is it always chilly?

I lived in Hamamatsu for one year! Ahhhhhh! :D :D :D :D :D

What makes you interested in Hamamatsu? I mean, I love the place, but it's kind of random.

I am so weak against the cold. That's the only reason I don't want Hokkaido. Buuut, if that's where I'm placed, that's where I go!

Hokkaido does have a pretty good summer, and it can get pretty hot I hear. It's really fall and spring that they don't have much of, since winter is so long (like late October until April). But, when it's not Winter, the weather can get really nice and warm.

Well, if you get Hokkaido, keep in mind that even though the winter is cold, most buildings you go into are super heated. In Sapporo, once I get to the subway and go downtown for shopping or going to the bars, I kind of regret all the layers I'm wearing because even the underground shopping is pretty warmed up. What is super crazy to me though is many of the Sapporo girls I see here are walking around in shorts or short skirts or dresses, with, at most, very thin tights underneath them. I'm wearing knee-high socks, fleece-lined leggings, and then my jeans, and I'm still kind of cold outside. I don't know how they can do it in 20 degree F weather!

I requested Hyogo (Awaji shima), Wakayama, and Okayama. Wanted somewhere warm, and a little more south. There's also a lot of natural beauty in those spots. I have family in Osaka so I would really love to be near there. I'm not sure if I should mention the family thing if they ask me about my requests in the interview though... any thoughts? I don't want to make it seem like I just want to be near my family.

When I applied, in the section where we able to write specific reasons for a placement request, I wrote about my fiance in Sapporo and my relatives in Okinawa. I'm sure they will ask me about it. I think that as long as we make it clear that yes, we want to be close to them, but they're not the sole reason we want to be in JET and go to Japan, I think it's okay.

It IS the city of music... :) Yamaha grand pianos are made in Hamamatsu, as I'm sure you know from your research. If you end up getting placed there or just want to know more about the city, feel free to PM me... I am more than happy to help you out, and I'll use any excuse to talk about Hamamatsu!

@minnesconsin I think wanting to be placed near your family is a very reasonable request... it IS your family, after all.

Isn't Okayama, Wakayama and Hyogo all in the same prefecture block? I thought you weren't supposed to do that.

If we both end up in Fukui, we'll definitely have to meet up! =D I'm also hoping to run into some exchange students from home so I'll have students with whom I can speak fluent English. I have a feeling that I'll miss it after a while. lol

I'm not too good with cold weather having spent my whole life in the southeast US, but I'm ready to throw on as many layers of leggings as it takes to brave the Japanese winters of any region for which I might be placed!
