Quick Question

Postby Calvin » Wed Apr 06, 2011 2:13 am

Hi, I hope everyone on here is doing well.
My names is James and I've been wondering lately how I feel about my life, and what I'm missing. A friend told me about JET and got me very interested. I'm an American college student who isn't sure what to do with his life :P

Anyway a few questions I have (which I haven't been able to find on the main page :/ )

-Is there any sort of college degree required to apply?
-If so, what kind? (I wonder because I'm currently in college and haven't graduated yet...)
-What are the chances of being "accepted" if I apply?

....I have tons more question, but if the answers I'm looking for in these aren't what I hope, then the rest doesn't matter....

Hi Calvin. If you go to the Aspiring Jets forum you can find threads along the lines of "Alternatives to JET" (there's a search option). Good luck with your choices!

Hi Calvin,

I may be wrong and if so someone can correct me but I believe you have to have a university degree to work in Japan. This is not a requirement for JET so much as it is required by the immigration law of Japan. In order to issue a work visa you must have a Bachelors Degree.
Be the change you want to see in the world.

Daichi is right, the concern is not the focus of the bachelor's degree, but just rather that you have one.

The degree thing is more of a governmental requirement than a JET requirement. I'm pretty sure there's no way to teach English in Japan without a degree unless you come and have private eikaiwa classes or something. But you won't be able to get hired on by a company or school to teach.
