Reasonable price for a used car?

Postby wwbashodo » Mon Jul 16, 2012 2:18 pm

Hi everyone:

I'm trying to replace my current car and am seriously considering buying a used one from a departing JET. Alas, I am not all that knowledgeable about cars, but I know a lot of you are, so I was hoping to get some advice. Any input would be appreciated. (If the seller's reading this, no offense -- I just want some other opinions. :) )

The car is a 1998 Suzuki Wagon R (a kei car), with 84,000 km on it. The shakken is paid through August 2013. The seller says she recently bought new snow tires. 4-wheel drive. 660cc engine (I'm embarrassed to say I'm not 100% percent sure what this means ;^^ ). The last shakken cost 80,000 yen. Seller is asking 125,000 yen.

Does this seem like a good price to you? What I'm trying to figure out (and don't have as good general knowledge as I wish I did) is whether the age of the car; mileage; or last shakken price look problematic in any way.

Thank you very much for any input!

That seems like a really good deal. That's a low-to-average shakken cost for a kei car. Wagon R's last forever, and new tires make up for the difference between the 80,000 and 125,000. Obviously make sure you can get pictures/see the car before hand, and have the seller tell you of any odd quirks with it, but seems like that should be fine.

Might be a lot of help to you. Just skip the pred part.

I would have concerns about the age of the car but looking at the milage alone it looks like a really good deal. I'd just check out the condition of the engine to make sure things have been taken care of. Just things like making sure the oil has been changed and the condition of the belts (chances are that if it passed shaken, it should be good - but you never know)

If you don't know about cars, ask someone who knows about the basics to look into it.

Also keep in mind that you could possibly push the car over 100,000km before the next shaken which would mean the next shaken will be closer to 100,000 yen as opposed to the older quotes for shaken.

But still - that car is a steal if it's in good condition. Big bonus points for the snow tires too.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for your help. I bought the car off the departing ALT for the asking price, and things look good so far. :) Hoping everything continues to hold up well!

Now I just have to get the paperwork done for changing the registration, including changing it across prefectures.
