You misunderstood what I was asking you for, you told me that I was right, and then you admitted that the things you say here are not the things you would say in real life. Why shouldn't I be amused, feel vindicated, and be thrilled, respectively?

Apologies for "The Last Samurai" title. I consider that movie horrifically racist and offensive, an unfortunate perpetuation of the "white messiah" concept. If I could remove it, I would.

If you can't separate your real life from the Internet, nor regulate your behavior in the real workd for say, work, or something informal with acquaintances, etc, then you must be insane. It isn't even about so called 'honesty', it is that human beings adjust their behavior to the situation they are in. So your reply left me speechless.

This guy can't tell the Internet from life. Hmm.

I don't think you act exactly like this irl, because I'm sure you want to keep your job. For all I know you are a great teacher, but you want to extrapolate about me cos I guess that makes you, dunno, feel good about yourself?

Anyways I've lost track of what we're supposed to be talking about now. I'm basically replying from some nervous reflex than desire to continue this conversation.

Now that seems like insanity...

But in all truth, I'm sure if the two of you met under other circumstances, without knowing the screen name of the other, you'd probably get along just fine.

Most of what is being said now isn't so much about substance as it is looking for little nitpicky problems with the others' post.

Hey now, just because some people decide to go 'I'm on the Internet, no one knows who I am, I can speak in any way I can imagine,' or 'I'm more free to express myself because I'm not using my real name here' doesn't mean that all people do. Some people might have the desire to present themselves differently, but not all.

Seeing as this is an 'official' forum for the JET Programme and, despite usernames, people have been punished 'in the real world' for things they've posted here, I'd like to think people represent themselves honestly, or at least professionally. Else they should be prepared for any repercussions.

It wouldn't surprise me if he does, although I doubt he'd often get to have debates and arguments like this in real life, so chances are it rarely comes out.

Why would I not act like this IRL? As I said before, I stand by what I've said here. MG watched me type large segments of it, we've discussed the subject at length. I haven't said anything in this thread that would could be viewed as offensive enough to cost me my job, as you implied--in fact, I don't think much of what I've said is offensive at all, save the insults directed at those who have insulted me (and I think it's fairly obvious that I was taking pains to be far more gentle than they). I just said things that I actually think. No crime in that. I'm a pretty honest guy online, when it comes right down to it. Oh, I have to work carefully to make it under the radar around here; the mods didn't care much for my brusque, ITIL-style whale biologist comments, so I've been forced to really alter the style and manner of my language and posts in order to stick around here without being banned. Ultimately, though, I try to convey my feelings in as sincere and honest a manner as possible. My mistake was assuming that you were being honest, too, which, in hindsight, was admittedly pretty stupid. Of course you don't think all those things, and would never say anything of the sort IRL. You're better than that, and I should've realized.

Don't you see? We're two trolls, passing in the night. This thread, like all clusterf*cks, started innocently enough, with innocent comments and responses all around, yet somehow, inevitably, it all went to LOL. What a spectacular cast of characters appeared here! The OP, who was amazingly sweet and non-judgmental, took what she needed from this thread, as she is clearly quite familiar with this system of tubes known as "The Internet." We were paid a visit by an apparent high-school drop-out with unusually amusing stockings. An intrepid time-traveling hypocrite flew by to write a novel about nothing, offer some sourceless statistics that lacked any relevance to the subject at hand, and offer a few choice insults, yet it now seems that Marty has made like a submarine. We were even visited by an alarmingly sophisticated, well-programmed spambot, Morn, who offered us some fantastic advice in his usual concise, straightforward manner. By the time you arrived, there was little more that you could contribute other than a string of nonsensical insults and hilarious tangents, yet you played your part like a master. It was beautiful. I must confess, it's been some time since I enjoyed a thread on Official this much. Would that they could all be so fulfilling and fun! Here's to many more like it!

As I said, I don't mean in the sense of 'honesty', I mean that so called real life and the internet follow different social conventions. Basic reason dictates that being very open about things with say your boss, or being overly opinionated at a work function and alienating your workmates by taking strong stands, or randomly becoming combative in class, is not going to make much sense. And if this wasn't the case I think society would be even more chaotic than it is.

Like when I came to my jet interview did I criticize the manner of my interviewer then rant about global warming? Nope, but arguably that would have been me truly being me, I just wouldn't be in Japan right now.

I would have no qualms revealing who I was to someone if I felt they were trustworthy, but you wouldn't randomly tell the whole world all your details and be like...come get some!!!

But exactly, that's my point. A forum is the exact right place for an intense verbal battle, but if we were all exactly this open in the real world, and in an inappropriate place...that's why people often stick to sports, films, food, hobbies irl, and in friendly situations politics, feminism, gender, race, homosexuality, religion, anything contested, just crops up at times perceived to be more appropriate.

I'd argue forums are there for these kinds of things, quite often.

Is just think irl and Internet are very different, and again it isn't to do with honesty or integrity, but the form itself. I self regulate before I tell the Kyoto Sensei I think his views are illogical and stupid (I don't - just a hypothetical) and end up just saying 'hmm, maybe, but I don't know about that. Might look into it'. But if he were some random Internet guy I would be much less equivocal.

I want to reply to you in more detail, but I'm typing on an iPhone. But man, to me you seem like the king of passive aggression. I think you really need to look at the way you write to people because I still think everything you post is dripping with unbearable smugness, insecurity and pomposity. You just come off as so ridiculous to me. I wanted to stop posting cos you are super annoying I was just too kind I say it.

Like how you take me to be saying I wouldn't randomly criticize you as being a pain irl, as everything I've been saying I didn't mean, and I'm just dishonest and offered nothing but insults to you?

You are a freakin' jerk. Don't be conciliatory while insulting someone. Everything I said previously about the way you behave is true. You remind me of my narcissistic, bipolar friend...who can't take responsibility for his behavior, who can't empathize with other people therefore constantly self glorifies himself, and expresses insecurity through phony pseudo intellectualism and self justifications.

Anyways I think I'm basically done here. No matter what I said here I STILL believe you self regulate in real life because you are a human.

Weird; why would you wanna be friends with someone like that?

Oh, well... As they say, "If the shoe fits..."
